Products

What they are: The outputs your project's activities create: documents, physical items, software, services, management outputs and decisions.

Example: "Safety Case", "Requirements Specification", "Design Report", "Test Results Package", "Training Manual".

Key points:

  • Activities produce or update products, and can depend on products from other activities
  • Products are expected at milestones, each expectation being a milestone criterion, such as 100% complete and Issued
  • A product's place on the Roadmap comes from the activity that produces it: its phase and its Accountable party
  • Products can be flagged as deliverable to the client

Adding products

On the Products tab, choose Edit, then Product (or Add Product in an empty project). Open a product to fill in its details:

  • Type: Document, Physical, Software, Service, Management or Decision
  • Purpose, Description and Quality Criteria: what it's for and what good looks like
  • Client deliverable: marks outputs that go to the client, so they stand out
  • under Produced By, the activities that create it, and under Dependency Of, the activities that need it

You can also link products from an activity's details (see Activities). A product that nothing produces is flagged by the Health Check.

Status through the phases

The Products tab shows each product's status in each phase: Draft, Updated, Issued or Re-issued. Read across a row to see how a product develops over the project.

Milestones

In a product's details, Milestone criteria lists the milestones that expect it, and how complete it should be at each. In edit mode, Expect at a milestone… adds one. See Phases and milestones for criteria and recording results.

On the Roadmap

Each product sits on the Roadmap in the phase and lane of the activity that produces it, below the products it depends on. Products can't be dragged: to move one, change its producing activity's phase or Accountable party. The product's details list each producing activity and mark the one that places it. Products that can't be placed are listed under Issues on the Roadmap, with what's missing (see Organisation and RACI).

To see what feeds a product, or what a change to it would affect, use the Integration Pathway and Impact Assessment tabs (see Project tabs).
