Governance bodies
A governance body is a group that makes decisions about the project, such as a project board, a steering committee or a design authority. Recording them shows who decides what, and who approves the project's gates.
Adding a governance body
On the Organisation tab, choose Edit, then Governance Body. Select it to fill in its details:
- Purpose: what the body is for, in a sentence or two.
- Description: anything else worth knowing, such as how often it meets.
- Terms of reference: its remit, authority and how it makes decisions.
Members
Under Members, choose Add to pick members from your parties, then give each one a role:
| Role | Use for |
|---|---|
| Chair | Leads the body |
| Deputy | Stands in for the chair |
| Secretary | Runs the body's administration and records its decisions |
| Voting Member | Takes part in decisions |
| Observer | Attends without a vote |
Members can be roles, teams or whole organisations, internal or external. On the Organisation chart, dashed lines join a governance body to its members.
Approving gates
A governance body can be the approval authority for a gate: the milestone where the project needs a go/no-go decision to continue. Open the milestone on the Lifecycle tab, turn on Gate, set Approval authority to Governance Body and choose it. See Phases and milestones.
Where governance bodies appear
- Organisation: on the chart, linked to their members.
- Staff Guide: each role's Governance section lists the bodies it sits on and its role in each.
- Offline copies: the PDF Export and Management Plan include governance, and the Poster shows each body with its chair, its members and the gates it approves (see Offline copies).
